1. How ZeroLogs.bike Works
ZeroLogs.bike helps Zero Motorcycles owners understand their own vehicle diagnostic data. The process is straightforward:
- You download your MBB (Main Bike Board) and BMS (Battery Management System) log files through the official Zero Motorcycles mobile app via Support > Email bike logs.
- You upload those
.binfiles to ZeroLogs.bike. - Our service parses the binary data and presents it as interactive charts, session analytics, battery health metrics, and AI-powered insights.
In other words, you are simply viewing your own vehicle data, exported through official channels, in a more readable and useful format.
2. What We Do — and What We Don't Do
What ZeroLogs.bike Does
- ✓Parses user-exported .bin log files that Zero's own app provides to owners
- ✓Visualizes data that is already accessible to the vehicle owner
- ✓Uses a publicly documented, community reverse-engineered binary format
- ✓Provides AI-powered analysis of your own diagnostic data
What ZeroLogs.bike Does NOT Do
- ✗Intercept live CANbus data from the motorcycle
- ✗Use OBD-II dongles to sniff real-time data
- ✗Decrypt or decode proprietary CANbus protocols
- ✗Bypass any encryption or access control mechanisms
- ✗Reverse-engineer encrypted communication protocols
This distinction is important: CANbus interception on newer Gen3 models may involve decryption of proprietary protocols, which is a fundamentally different activity from parsing files that Zero Motorcycles itself exports for the owner. No encryption is bypassed when using ZeroLogs.bike.
3. Community Precedent
The Zero Motorcycles community has been parsing these exact same log files for years using open-source tools. ZeroLogs.bike builds on this established, publicly available work:
- zero-motorcycle-community/zero-log-parser — The original open-source Python parser (MIT licensed)
- zero-motorcycle-community/browser-parse — Browser-based log parser
- Hasslers.net online parser — A long-running community web tool for parsing Zero log files
- zero-motorcycle-community/web-tools — Community web tools collection
- Log structure documentation — Publicly documented binary format specification
These tools have been openly available on GitHub for years without legal challenge. The binary log format is publicly documented, and no encryption or access control is involved in reading the files.
4. DMCA Class 7 Exemption — Vehicle Data Access (October 2024)
Key takeaway: In October 2024, the Librarian of Congress adopted a new DMCA exemption that explicitly protects vehicle owners' right to access, store, and share their own vehicle diagnostic and operational data — including through third-party services acting on their behalf.
The new Class 7 exemption to Section 1201 of the DMCA covers computer programs for the purpose of accessing, storing, and sharing operational data, including diagnostic and telematics data, of motorized land vehicles. This directly applies to what ZeroLogs.bike does.
Key aspects of the exemption:
- Effective October 28, 2024 — Valid for a three-year period (2024–2027)
- Applies to vehicle owners and lessees
- Extends to those acting on their behalf, such as third-party tools and services (confirmed in the Register's Recommendation)
- Covers operational data, diagnostic data, and telematics data
- Applies to motorized land vehicles, which includes motorcycles
The Register of Copyrights determined that:
“[T]he prohibition on circumvention adversely affects the ability of lawful owners and lessees, or those acting on their behalf, to access, store, and share operational and telematics data, which are likely to be noninfringing.”
The exemption was supported by both the DOJ Antitrust Division and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), who argued it would:
“[P]romote competition in markets for replacement parts, repair, and maintenance services, as well as facilitate competition in markets for repairable products.”
5. Vehicle Repair Exemption (Renewed & Expanded)
Separately from the new Class 7 exemption, the existing DMCA exemption for vehicle repair has been renewed and expanded. This exemption allows circumvention of technological protection measures when it is a necessary step to diagnose, repair, or lawfully modify a vehicle. It has existed since 2015 and has been progressively expanded:
- 2015: Original exemption for vehicle repair
- 2018: Expanded to include third-party service providers (not just owners)
- 2021: Further expanded to include telematics systems, entertainment systems, and commercial/agricultural vehicles
- 2024: Renewed with the addition of the new Class 7 data-access exemption
6. Right to Repair
The DMCA Class 7 exemption is part of a broader movement toward vehicle owner data rights. Multiple U.S. states have enacted Right to Repair laws, including California, Minnesota, Colorado, and Massachusetts, among others. The trend is clear: consumers and independent repair shops have the right to access vehicle diagnostic data.
Both the FTC and DOJ have publicly supported these rights, as reflected in their comments to the Copyright Office and their advocacy for the Class 7 exemption.
7. Your Rights as a Vehicle Owner
Under current U.S. law, as a vehicle owner you have the right to:
- Access your vehicle's diagnostic and operational data — including through circumvention of access controls if necessary (DMCA Class 7 exemption)
- Store and share that data — including with third-party tools and services acting on your behalf
- Diagnose and repair your vehicle — using tools of your choice, including third-party diagnostic services (vehicle repair exemption)
- Use independent repair services — you are not limited to manufacturer-authorized dealers
8. Why ZeroLogs.bike Is Legal
To summarize, ZeroLogs.bike operates fully within legal boundaries because:
- No circumvention occurs. The log files are exported by Zero Motorcycles' own app — no encryption or access control is bypassed.
- Even if circumvention were involved, it would be exempted. The 2024 DMCA Class 7 exemption explicitly protects accessing vehicle diagnostic data, including through third-party services.
- The vehicle repair exemption independently applies. Accessing diagnostic data is a protected activity under the renewed repair exemption.
- Community precedent exists. Open-source tools parsing the same files have been publicly available for years without challenge.
- Federal agencies support these rights. Both the FTC and DOJ advocated for the vehicle data exemption.
