Where a Zero’s 12 V power comes from, and where its fuses are
The hardware layer under every light, horn, dash and accessory socket on a Zero: the high-voltage cartridge fuses that feed the DC/DC converter, the converter itself, the 12 V fuse centre downstream of it, and the Power Distribution Unit that replaced most of that fuse centre from model year 2020. Every rating, part number and dash code here is read out of Zero's own manuals — 343 fuse rows from 68 tables in 35 documents covering model years 2015 to 2026 — and the page is equally explicit about the three things those manuals never publish: the converter's output voltage, its power rating, and a 12 V wiring diagram for any generation.
The high-voltage fuses here are not a DIY job. The 12 V fuse centre is owner-serviceable and this page treats it as such. The cartridge fuses upstream of the DC/DC converter are not: they sit on a pack above 100 V that stays live with the key out, and Zero’s service manuals require training, certified insulating gloves and a documented lockout before that area is opened. Your own model-year manual is the authority on every figure below.
TL;DR
- A Gen2 Zero has a fuse for every 12 V circuit; a Gen3 does not. The S, DS, SR, DSR, FX, FXS and FXE carry a 12 V fuse block of 6 fuses plus a separate 25 A ABS motor fuse in its own holder, and one fuse feeds one load: headlight, accessory, flashers and horn, dash and running lights each have their own. On the SR/F, SR/S and DSR/X the centre is 7 fuses, but 3 of them are identical 10 A feeds to a Power Distribution Unit, and the PDU acts in place of the fuses for 10 circuits. So a rider hunting a blown headlight fuse on an SR/F is looking for a component that does not exist on the motorcycle.
- The 10 circuits with no fuse on a Gen3 are named by Zero, not inferred by us: High Beam, Low Beam, Running Lights, Blinkers, Horn, 12 volt Auxiliary Outlet, Brake Light, Motor Controller, Dash, OBDII Port. That sentence appears in 13 of the 13 Gen3 owner manuals in our index, from model year 2020 to 2026, in the same words each time (26_FST_Street-_EU_-_English-_8812119-AC.pdf p136). Note what is on that list besides the lights: the 12 V auxiliary outlet, the motor controller, the dash and the OBD-II port.
- What replaces the fuse on a Gen3 is a number on the dash. Zero’s Error Code List names 15 codes whose subject is a 12 V circuit — shorts and opens on the headlight, brake light and both turn signals, plus 6 whose printed name begins "12V", covering the battery, its heater and the rail itself, and code 26, "DC-DC Low DC-DC converter voltage low". Only one of the 15 is marked in the manual's Check Engine Light column, code 28, and the manual’s own footnote defines that column as permanent torque reduction until the fault is cleared.
- On the high-voltage side the two generations are not comparable either. A Gen2 S or DS has 4 cartridge fuses under the seat — SPT3.15A Low power B+, ABC4A MBB / motor controller, ABC4A DC/DC converter, 100 A Charge circuit (in-line) — of which the last is an in-line fuse the manual says to have replaced by a dealer (21MY_SDS_OM_-_English-04.pdf p102). A Gen3 has 2: SPT3.15A DC/DC converter and SPT3.15A MBB / contactor. The community archive’s page on this subject describes a single cartridge and lists the DC/DC converter and the MBB as its two loads, which is wrong on both counts.
- These tables are remarkably stable, which is the opposite of what the fastener tables do. Comparing every circuit across all 35 manuals finds exactly one rating change across the 12 model years 2015 to 2026 and four platform families: the FX and FXS accessory charge fuse went from JLLN70 to JLLN100 at model year 2016. The other difference worth knowing is not a change over time but a split between platforms: the ABS motor fuse is 25 A on the SR/F and SR/S and 30 A on the DSR/X and the ADV line.
- The 12 V rail is not a battery on a Gen2 and is on a Gen3. A Gen2 has no 12 V battery at all: the DC/DC converter is enabled by the main board on key-on and the 12 V system is dead when the key is out. A Gen3 carries a maintenance-free lithium-iron-phosphate 12 V battery under the rider's seat with a heater bonded to its case, which arms when recent temperatures have been below 41 °F (5 °C) — and while it warms, the manual says the motorcycle is disabled for 1-15 minutes until the battery is above 32 °F (0 °C). That is a cold-morning behaviour riders routinely mistake for a fault.
- Do not upsize the accessory fuse. The Gen2 accessory circuit is fuse 4 (10 A) and the community archive records owners fitting 12.5 A and 15 A in its place "for even more accessory power". The fuse protects the accessory harness, not the converter: a larger fuse does not make the wire thicker, it makes the wire the fusible element. Zero's own position is that the supplied connectors are the only approved method for powering add-ons and that nothing may be wired to the 12 V battery directly (26_FST_Street-_EU_-_English-_8812119-AC.pdf p136, 26_FST_Street-_EU_-_English-_8812119-AC.pdf p134).
- Three figures riders quote constantly are not in any Zero manual. The DC/DC converter’s output voltage, its output current and its power rating appear in none of the manuals in our index — a search across all of them for a wattage, an amperage or a rail voltage attached to "DC/DC" or "DC-DC" returns nothing. The 13.5 V configured, ~13.8 V measured, 300 W pre-2015 and 500 W from 2015 figures all come from the rescued zeromanual community archive, which also contradicts itself by calling the rail "a very consistent 14 volts" on a different page. They are reproduced here as community measurements, attributed, and not presented as specifications.
- Nothing on this page authorises high-voltage work. The DC/DC converter’s input side and three of the cartridge fuses named here sit on a pack that is live with the key off, and the service manuals say so in as many words: high-voltage work "requires special training, qualifications and tools" (FST_ADV_-_Service_Manual_8811933-AL.pdf p12), the Gen2 discharge procedure accepts the bus as safe only below 2 V (SDS_Service_Manual_-8811965-AD.pdf p29), and the Gen3 lockout sequence begins by pulling the DC/DC and contactor high-voltage fuses and disconnecting the 12 V negative terminal (FST_ADV_-_Service_Manual_8811933-AL.pdf p12).
Two answers to “where is the fuse”
Every Zero runs its lights, horn, dash, ABS and accessory socket on a 12 V rail, and no Zero has an alternator. The rail is produced by a DC/DC converter that steps the traction pack down from something over 100 V, and everything downstream of that converter is ordinary low-voltage motorcycle electrics. That much is common to all of them. How the rail is divided up and protected is not.
On the Gen2 platforms — the S, DS, SR and DSR, and the FX, FXS and FXE — the converter output goes to a fuse block of 6 fuses — plus the ABS motor fuse in a red-capped holder of its own beside it, 7 in total — and the mapping is one fuse to one load. The headlight has a fuse. The accessory circuit has a fuse. The flashers, horn and brake light share one. If a circuit is dead, there is a physical part you can pull out, hold up to the light and replace.
On the Gen3 platforms — the SR/F, SR/S and DSR/X — the fuse centre still has 7 fuses, and a rider who counts them may conclude nothing has changed. It has. 3 of those 7 are identical 10 A fuses whose "circuits controlled" entry is not a load at all but the Power Distribution Unit. The PDU is what switches and protects the lights, the horn, the brake light, the dash, the OBD-II port, the motor controller and the 12 V auxiliary outlet, and Zero says so directly: it "acts in place of the fuses" for those 10 circuits.
This is the single most consequential fact on the page, because it changes what a diagnosis looks like. A rider whose SR/F headlight has stopped working, following advice written for a Gen2 or copied from a community wiki, will remove the seat, open the fuse centre, find no headlight fuse, and conclude that they are looking in the wrong place. They are looking in the right place at a motorcycle that does not have the part.

Wrong in the community archive: “Gen3 models have a fuse block”
The archived 12V Fuse Block page says "Gen3 models have a fuse block but the protection has redundant upstream components in the MBB, so the fuse block just helps with isolation", and then prints a components table that is Gen2-only — headlamp, accessory circuit, instrument cluster, flashers, ignition key. What a Gen3 actually holds is 1 5 A Cell Module, 2 10 A ABS-9 Valve, 3 10 A PDU (Power Distribution Unit), 4 10 A PDU (Power Distribution Unit), 5 10 A PDU (Power Distribution Unit), 6 5 A Dash, 7 25 A ABS-18, Motor. The difference is not redundancy: the headlight, accessory and flasher fuses are absent, and the circuits they used to protect are handled by the Power Distribution Unit (26_FST_Street-_EU_-_English-_8812119-AC.pdf p136). Read the archived table as a description of a Gen2 fuse block and nothing else.
The DC/DC converter, and the numbers nobody published
The converter is the whole 12 V system’s power station. It is a solid-state step-down unit that takes traction-pack voltage on its input and produces the low-voltage rail on its output, and on every platform it has its own high-voltage cartridge fuse: ABC4A on the S and DS, ABC4A on the FX family, and SPT3.15A on Gen3, where it is one of only 2 high-voltage fuses the owner manual lists at all.
It is also enabled rather than always-on. On Gen2 the main board asserts an enable signal at key-on; with the key out the converter is off and the 12 V rail is dead, which is why a Gen2 has nothing to power a security device or a tracker while parked. Gen3 changes that by putting an actual 12 V battery on the rail, so the systems that need to be awake with the key off have a supply — and the main board tops that battery up from the pack.
Where the converter physically lives is the one part of this the service manuals are generous about, and it differs per platform. On the S and DS it is bolted to the module bracket and reached with the tank off; on the FX family it sits on mounting studs and comes in two variants the manual distinguishes as Modular and Integrated; on Gen3 it is inside the tank, on the HCU bracket, behind the storage liner. The install torques below are transcribed from those procedures, and one of them is genuinely odd.

The imperial and metric figures in each torque were checked against 1 lb·ft = 1.355818 Nm during extraction, because on the ADV service manual the two halves of that figure sit on opposite sides of an interleaved column and a reassembly could have picked up a neighbouring fastener’s value. "Hand" is Zero’s own entry, not a missing value.
Two service manuals, two torques for the same four bolts
The 2 street-platform service manuals specify the four T30 bolts holding the DC/DC converter to the HCU bracket as "Torque: Hand" (S_SR-SRF_Service_Manual_8811935-AJ.pdf p87, SRS_Service_Manual_8811934-AI.pdf p87), while the ADV manual gives 6 lb·ft (8 Nm) for what its own text describes identically — bolts (x4), DC/DC converter, HCU bracket, T30 (FST_ADV_-_Service_Manual_8811933-AL.pdf p62). We have not resolved which is intended and are not going to guess: use the manual for your own model, and prefer the numbered figure over "Hand" if you have a wrench and the choice, since a specified torque is checkable and a hand-tight one is not.
Wrong in the community archive: the part number and pinout are Gen2 S/X only
The archived DC-DC_12V_Converter page opens by saying "The converters mentioned here are used on Gen2 and Gen3 models", and then everything under it is Gen2: a Sevcon 300 W or 500 W unit, a five-pin connector, MBB pins 20 and 21 for the enable signal, continuity checks quoted against MBB pins 7, 18 and 20. None of that applies to an SR/F. The Gen3 converter is a separate assembly on the HCU bracket with its own harness connector and a grey locking clip, protected by an SPT3.15A high-voltage fuse on the power pack, and its 12 V loads are distributed by the Power Distribution Unit (26_FST_Street-_EU_-_English-_8812119-AC.pdf p139, 26_FST_Street-_EU_-_English-_8812119-AC.pdf p136). Do not probe an SR/F to a Gen2 pinout. Also read the archived table’s "Measurement" column as the voltage of the circuit each pin belongs to rather than a reading to expect at that pin: pin 3 is the pack negative return and pin 5 the 12 V ground.
What Zero has never published about this converter
Its output voltage, its output current and its power rating. Searching the full text of all 46 manuals in our index for a wattage, an amperage or a rail voltage adjacent to "DC/DC" or "DC-DC" returns nothing at all. Everything a rider has ever been told about those three numbers comes from owners measuring their own bikes, and it is set out as such in the next section rather than laundered into a specification.
The accessory circuit, and the fuse people upsize
On Gen2 the accessory circuit is one fuse: number 4 (10 A) in the 12 V centre, unchanged across every S, DS, SR, DSR, FX, FXS and FXE owner manual in our index from model year 2015 to 2025. What that fuse feeds is where the manuals go quiet. The owner manual documents a blanked "Cavity for Accessory 12 Volt Socket" in the dash shoulder, described as the "location for Zero dealer-installed 12 volt accessory socket" and nothing more (23_SDS_OM_-_English-88-09956-06.pdf p23, in 10 Gen2 manuals). The weather-sealed Sumitomo connector under the tank plastics, and the SAE connector added beside it on the same circuit, are documented only by the community archive. They are real — thousands of owners have used them — but if you want an OEM citation for them, there is not one.
On Gen3 the accessory provision is explicit and different. The manual states that the motorcycle has two 12 V accessory connectors, that they are "powered by the motorcycle’s DC-DC converter and not the 12 volt battery", and that they are "the only approved method for powering Zero approved add-on electrical accessories" — the same sentences in 13 manuals from 2020 to 2026. The 12 V auxiliary outlet itself is on the PDU list, so there is no accessory fuse to pull if it stops working.
The reason the sourcing distinction matters is that a Gen3 accessory hung off the 12 V battery instead of the connectors is a fault the manual predicts in specific terms: "DO NOT connect any accessories directly to the 12 volt battery. Operation of the motorcycle and ABS may be adversely affected." That is not boilerplate about voiding a warranty; it names ABS.
Do not upsize the 10 A accessory fuse
The archived 12V Accessory Power Circuit page notes that "some owners have used increased size fuses such as 12.5 or 15 amp for even more accessory power". Do not do that. The fuse is sized to protect the accessory harness, not to ration the converter, and a larger fuse does not make the wire thicker — it makes the wire the fusible element, which is how a loom melts behind the tank plastics. Zero’s own framing of what a fuse is for is unambiguous: fuses are "a one-time protection device", you "replace the fuse with one of equal current and voltage rating", and if it "melts repeatedly, have the electrical system inspected by your dealer" (26_FST_ADV_-_EU_-_English-_8812128-AC.pdf p136, 26_FST_Street-_EU_-_English-_8812119-AC.pdf p136). If you need more than this circuit provides, run a separate feed of adequate gauge with its own correctly sized fuse.
“14 V and 140 W” is a fuse rating, not a power budget
The archived page says the 12 V system "operates at a very consistent 14 volts, which provides up to 140W (10A) of power available on the accessory circuit", and treats 140 W as the allowance. Two problems. The archive contradicts itself: its own DC-DC converter page says the unit is configured for 13.5 V and usually produces about 13.8 V, and no Zero manual states any of the three figures. More importantly, 140 W is 10 A times 14 V — that is the current at which the protection is meant to act, not a load to plan around. Size accessories with real headroom below the fuse rating. The 500 W figure the same page quotes for 2015-and-later bikes is also, by its own admission, mostly reserved for the ABS pump.
Community figures, kept as community figures
For completeness, because riders will meet them: the archive gives the Gen2 converter as a Sevcon 300 W unit on 2013–2014 bikes and a Sevcon 500 W unit from 2015, an output configured to 13.5 V measuring around 13.8 V, and capacities of 20–25 A and 35–40 A respectively. It also reports the converter’s input as always live upstream of the contactor, which is what makes an always-on tap possible on a Gen2. Every one of those is an owner measurement or an owner inference, none is in a Zero document, and the pre-2015 half of it is outside this page’s scope in any case. Treat them as orientation, not specification.
Every 12 V fuse centre, as printed
The 12 V fuse ratings are identical in every Gen2 owner manual from model year 2015 onward, and identical again across every Gen3 one. That stability is worth saying out loud, because it is the opposite of what the fastener tables do, and it means a rider with the wrong model year’s fuse list is usually still right — which in turn is why the two places the list does differ catch people out.
The boundary at model year 2015 is real and it is ABS. Comparing the MY2014 tables against MY2015 shows 3 ABS circuits appearing in the S platform's 12 V centre in a single model year — ABS-18 motor at 25 A, ABS-4, key at 5 A, ABS-9 valve at 10 A — with the running-lights fuse folded into the dash fuse at the same time, and 2 more circuits appearing on the high-voltage side: Charge circuit (in-line) at 100 A and Low power B+ at SPT3.15A. That is why this page starts where it does: a pre-2015 fuse list is a genuinely different list, not an older printing of the same one.
Where the centre lives differs by platform and is worth knowing before you start removing plastics. On the S and DS it is under the seat, two bolts and a rearward pull. On the FX family it is on the frame under the right-hand front body panel on most years, and behind the front power pack on the earliest ones. On the SR/F and SR/S it is under the rider’s seat behind a closeout panel; on the DSR/X and the ADV line it is above the 12 V battery, and the manual says the battery has to come out first.
The one row that is not really in the centre is the ABS motor fuse. On Gen2 it is a separate holder plugged into a red cap — keyed 0 in the S/DS tables and relabelled ABS (B) in the FX tables from model year 2023 — and it is the heaviest 12 V fuse on the motorcycle. On Gen3 it is simply fuse 7 in the same block as the rest.

The ratings match the S/DS table exactly; only the key of the ABS motor fuse and some circuit wordings differ. From model year 2023 Zero relabels that fuse from "0" to "ABS (B)" without changing the rating.

Fuses 3, 4, 5 are three identical 10 A feeds to the Power Distribution Unit. Nothing in this table names a light, a horn or an accessory socket, because none of those has a fuse on this platform. Identical in all 9 SR/F and SR/S owner manuals we hold, model years 2020 to 2026.

One row differs from the street Gen3 table: the ABS motor fuse is 30 A here against 25 A on the SR/F and SR/S. Fitting the street value on a DSR/X gives you a fuse that will nuisance-blow under the ABS pump; fitting the DSR/X value on a street bike gives you a circuit protected above its design current.

Computed by comparing every circuit name across every owner-manual table, not read from a changelog. The MY2015 rows are the arrival of ABS and are shown for context even though this page's published tables start at MY2015: they are what makes MY2015 the right place to start. Only one row is a rating change to a circuit that existed before and after — Accessory charge port (in-line) on the XMX platform, JLLN70 to JLLN100 at MY2016. Circuit names are normalised before comparison so that Zero’s own re-wordings ("ABS-4 Key" and "ABS 4, Key") do not read as changes.
The cartridge fuses on the high-voltage side
Upstream of the converter there is a second, much smaller set of fuses, and they are not a 12 V component at all: they sit on the traction pack’s B+ bus at over 100 V. Zero prints them in the same General Maintenance chapter as the 12 V centre, which is probably why the community archive merged the two subjects and got the count wrong.
The S and DS list 4: 1 — SPT3.15A Low Power B+; 2 — ABC4A MBB (Main Bike Board)/Controller; 3 — ABC4A DC/DC Converter; 4 — 100 A Charge Fuse (in-line). The first three are cartridges you unscrew; the fourth is a large in-line fuse encapsulated in the cable, and the manual explicitly says to contact a dealer to replace it (25_XMX_OM_-_EU_English_-_8811991-AE.pdf p111).
The FX family lists 4, and its set is different in a way that matters for a specific and common symptom: 1 — ABC4A Main Bike Board/Controller; 2 — ABC4A DC/DC Converter; 3 — JLLN100 ACCY Charge Fuse (in-line); 4 — ABC10A Charge Fuse (on-board). There are two charge fuses, not one. The in-line accessory-charge fuse is dealer-only; the ABC10A cartridge for the onboard charger is not. Note also that the FX list has no Low Power B+ entry at all — that fuse lives on the removable pack itself, behind its own bolted cover.
Gen3 lists only 2, and both are the same part: 1 — SPT3.15A DC/DC Converter; 2 — SPT3.15A MBB (Main Bike Board)/Contactor. There is no charge fuse in the owner-manual list on Gen3 and no controller fuse; the two cartridges you can reach protect the DC/DC converter and the board-plus-contactor branch. Those two are also exactly what the Gen3 lockout procedure has you pull before touching anything.

SPT3.15A is a 3.15 A 5×20 mm cartridge; ABC4A and ABC10A are ceramic 4 A and 10 A cartridges; JLLN100 is a 100 A Class T fuse. The FX family’s in-line accessory charge fuse was JLLN70 through model year 2015 and JLLN100 from MY2016.
Wrong in the community archive: three cartridges under an S seat, not one
The archived Gen2/Low Power Battery Positive Fuse page names a single SPT3.15A 5×20 mm cartridge and lists the DC-DC 12 V converter and the MBB as its loads. The S and DS owner manuals list 4 high-voltage fuses under the seat, and the loads are separate: SPT3.15A for Low Power B+, ABC4A for the MBB and controller, and ABC4A for the DC/DC converter (23_SDS_OM_-_English-88-09956-06.pdf p104). If you are chasing a dead DC/DC converter or a dead main board on an S or DS, the fuse you want is an ABC4A ceramic, and fitting a 3.15 A there will nuisance-blow. On an FX or FXS the set is different again — two ceramic cartridges behind the side panels, with the pack’s own Low Power B+ fuse behind a bolted cover on the battery.
Wrong in the community archive: the FX and FXS have two charge fuses
The archived Gen2/Charging Circuit Fuse page leaves the X-platform row of its table blank and says that from 2014 a single fuse covers both the accessory charging port and the onboard charger. That is true for the S and DS, which list one 100 A in-line charge fuse. It is not true for the FX family, whose manual lists both a JLLN100 in-line accessory charge fuse (dealer-only) and a separate ABC10A cartridge for the onboard charger (25_XMX_OM_-_EU_English_-_8811991-AE.pdf p111). The practical consequence: an FX that charges fine from an external charger but not from its own wall cord may simply have a blown ABC10A cartridge — a user-replaceable part the archived page never mentions.
These are high-voltage fuses and this page is not a procedure
A Zero pack sits well over 100 V and its terminals stay live with the key out and the contactor open. Zero’s service manuals state that work on high-voltage components "requires special training, qualifications and tools" and mandate barricades, a high-voltage safety hook and certified insulating gloves before anything is touched (FST_ADV_-_Service_Manual_8811933-AL.pdf p12). The Gen2 discharge procedure uses a specified tool, PN 85-05665, and accepts the bus as discharged only below 2 V — above that it says to stop and contact Zero (SDS_Service_Manual_-8811965-AD.pdf p29). The Gen3 lockout sequence begins by removing the DC/DC and contactor high-voltage fuses and disconnecting the 12 V negative terminal (FST_ADV_-_Service_Manual_8811933-AL.pdf p12, FST_ADV_-_Service_Manual_8811933-AL.pdf p12). Note also that the motor stop switch is not an isolation device: the owner manuals say in as many words that it "does not turn off all electrical circuits" (25_XMX_OM_-_EU_English_-_8811991-AE.pdf p40).
Torque matters on a high-voltage terminal in both directions
Zero’s high-voltage guidance is that terminal fasteners must be tightened to the specified torque and that "insufficient or excessive torque will cause malfunctions or damage" (SDS_Service_Manual_-8811965-AD.pdf p10). That cuts against the community archive’s controller-terminal instructions, which give 7 Nm ± 1 in one clause and "7–12 ft-lbs" — 9.5 to 16.3 Nm — in the next sentence of the same step. Two figures a factor of two apart cannot both be a specification.
The Gen3 12 V battery, and why the bike sometimes refuses to move
A Gen2 has no 12 V battery. A Gen3 does, and it is not an afterthought: the manual describes a maintenance-free 12 V battery whose job is "to power the motorcycle’s systems when the key switch is in the OFF position", located under the rider’s seat and accessed from the left-hand side, charged from the power pack with the main board monitoring its state of charge (26_FST_Street-_EU_-_English-_8812119-AC.pdf p134, in 13 manuals).
Three of its properties change how you treat it. It is lithium iron phosphate, so it needs an approved LiFePO4 charger and not a lead-acid maintainer. It has a heater bonded to its exterior, which is why Zero insists on a genuine replacement and warns that a non-approved battery "may prevent the motorcycle from operating correctly and will cause errors to be displayed on the dash panel". And it must be disconnected from the motorcycle before it is tested or charged, with a specific prohibition on connecting a maintainer while it is still wired in.
The heater is the source of a behaviour that reads as a fault and is not. When recent temperatures have been below 41 °F (5 °C) the heater engages, and the manual states that during that warming "the motorcycle will be temporarily disabled for 1-15 minutes until the temperature of the 12 volt battery is determined to be above 32 °F (0 °C)" (21MY_SRF_OM_-_English-05.pdf p155). A quarter of an hour of a cold Gen3 doing nothing is documented behaviour. So is a dash notification about it: the system-notification list includes "12V Battery Heating up".
The floor is 10 V. The manual says not to attempt to charge a 12 V battery whose voltage has fallen below 10 V, because one below that "may be damaged and could catch fire/explode if charged" (26_FST_Street-_EU_-_English-_8812119-AC.pdf p134). If your Gen3 has sat long enough to get there, the battery is a replacement rather than a recharge.
Zero’s own two answers on trickle charging the 12 V battery
The 12 Volt Battery section says "Do not connect a battery maintainer (trickle charger) to the 12 volt battery while it is installed/connected to the motorcycle. The connection of a battery maintainer may cause problems with the motorcycle’s own charging system" (26_FST_Street-_EU_-_English-_8812119-AC.pdf p134). The Parking and Long Term Storage section of the same manuals says "If a trickle charger (approved LIFEPO4 charger, only) is available, Zero recommends installing the charger on the 12V battery" (23_DSRX_OM_-_English_-_88-09970-AK.pdf p139, in 4 manuals). We are not going to pretend those reconcile cleanly. The reading that makes both true is that the storage advice assumes the battery is disconnected first, as the maintenance section separately requires; if you are not prepared to disconnect it, follow the prohibition rather than the recommendation.
The archive got the chemistry right and the mechanism half right
The archived FST Platform/12V Battery page correctly identifies the chemistry as lithium iron phosphate and correctly reports the heater and the key-on charging. Its two hedged claims — that the converter is engaged periodically with the key off to maintain the battery, and that the externally accessible B+ and B− fuses are therefore recommended to be removed before work — are both marked "reportedly" on the page itself, and the second is independently correct: pulling those two fuses is step 7 of Zero’s own lockout procedure (FST_ADV_-_Service_Manual_8811933-AL.pdf p12). Credit where it is due; the hedge was honest.
A 12 V circuit has failed: what to do on each generation
The first move differs by generation, and doing the Gen2 move on a Gen3 wastes an afternoon. On Gen2, a dead 12 V circuit is a fuse question: identify the circuit, find its fuse in the table above, pull it and look at it. Nothing reports a blown lighting fuse on a Gen2 — the dash flash-code table covers the powertrain, not the 12 V loads.
On Gen3, a dead 12 V circuit is a code question. The PDU drives the circuit and senses it, so a short or an open is detected and named. Zero's Error Code List carries 15 codes whose subject is a 12 V circuit, and the pattern is consistent: a "Short Fault" is a short on the circuit and a "Bulb Out Fault" is an open. Read the code first; there is no consumable part to inspect.
One class of symptom does point at the same component on both generations. If the entire 12 V system is dead at once — headlight, turn signals and brake light all off — while the dash is on and the motorcycle still operates, the fault is upstream of everything the fuse tables cover. The archive’s Loss of 12V Power page enumerates the candidates well: the converter’s high-voltage input fuse blown or disconnected, a loose connector at the converter, a failed enable signal from the main board, a broken ground in the 12 V bundle, or the converter itself. That triage is community work, not OEM, and it is good community work. On a Gen3 the same symptom has a dash code attached to it: code 26, "DC-DC Low DC-DC converter voltage low.".

Transcribed from the Error Code List of every Gen3 owner manual in our index. The CEL column is Zero’s own: its footnote says a code marked there "has caused the motorcycle to enter into a state of permanent torque reduction" and lights the Check Engine Light. The four turn-signal codes are absent from the earliest Gen3 manual we hold, OM-SRF-MY20.pdf, which is why they read 12 rather than 13.

From 21MY_SDS_OM_-_English-04.pdf p107. The Gen2 dash counts red flashes rather than printing a number, and its list is powertrain faults; there is no flash code for a blown 12 V fuse.
Check the obvious asymmetry first
One circuit dead and everything else fine points at that circuit: a fuse on Gen2, a code on Gen3. Everything on the 12 V rail dead at once, with the dash alive, points at the converter, its input fuse, its enable signal or its ground — and on Gen3 at code 26 or code 27 / 28. Everything dead including the dash is not a 12 V problem at all.
The main contactor and precharge, from the 12 V side
The contactor belongs in this article because it is a 12 V device controlling a high-voltage one, and because the fault it produces has a name riders meet in their logs. It is a large relay in the power pack that separates the pack’s positive side from the propulsion system: a small coil current, supplied on the low-voltage side, closes contacts rated for the pack’s full current. On Gen3 one cartridge fuse protects the main board and the contactor branch together — the owner manual prints it as "MBB (Main Bike Board)/Contactor" (26_FST_Street-_EU_-_English-_8812119-AC.pdf p139) and the service manual’s lockout step calls the same fuse CONT, which is one of the two it has you pull before any high-voltage work (FST_ADV_-_Service_Manual_8811933-AL.pdf p12).
Before the contactor closes, the controller’s bus has to be brought up to pack voltage. Closing a contactor onto a discharged capacitor bank is what welds contacts, so the system precharges first and then verifies that the two sides match. When that check fails, the Gen2 dash flashes 4 times and the manual reads "Precharge Fail — Could not pre-charge motor controller. Contact Zero or your dealer."; a contactor fault proper is 6 flashes (21MY_SDS_OM_-_English-04.pdf p107). The same family appears in our own log error catalog under lack-of-precharge and "Did not close contactor" signatures, which is where you will see it if you are reading a log rather than a dash.
An occasional precharge event at startup is not automatically a defect; a repeated one is. What makes it worth understanding from the 12 V side is that the coil supply and the sense path both run on low voltage, so a marginal 12 V rail can present as a high-voltage symptom. On a Gen3 that link is explicit in the code list: a "12V Low Voltage Fault 12V system fault." is one code away from a contactor complaint, and both come from the same board.
The contactor also opens on its own for reasons that have nothing to do with a fault: after a few seconds with the key off, after a long idle with no control input, and outside the pack’s temperature window. That last one is where the community archive goes wrong in a way worth naming but not re-litigating here: its temperature table gives one cold cutoff for every Zero, and the owner manuals give different figures for Gen2 and Gen3. Which number applies to your motorcycle is the thermal page’s subject, not this one’s — take it from there rather than from the archive.
What the archive contributes here, and what it does not
The archived Main Contactor page is genuinely good on theory — the kickback diode, the independence of coil rating and contact rating, why you never make or break under load — and it identifies the 2014-and-later part as a GigaVac GX11 that fails safe open. None of that is in a Zero manual and none of it is contradicted by one. Its charging-limit table, on the other hand, stops at model year 2018 and assumes a 28-series pack driven by a Sevcon controller, so its "too high (117 V)" and "the Sevcon won’t operate above 118 V" advice applies to no Gen3 motorcycle at all. Read the theory, ignore the table if you ride an SR/F.
The 2026 light line is a third architecture
The LS1, XB and XE do not follow either pattern above, and anyone applying this page to one of them will be wrong in a new way. Their traction voltage is far lower — the LS1 fuse list names a 64 V high-voltage input and the XE a 72 V one — and their fuse centres are small, lettered and include spares.
The LS1 has a 4-fuse centre under the right-hand upper side panel with a spare position, and two of those fuses are for systems no Gen2 has: traction control and ABS as separate circuits. The XB is simpler still — 1 fuse plus a spare. The XE sits between them with two fuses of different colours, one on each side of the DC/DC converter — which is a useful thing to see stated, because it is the same input-fuse/output-fuse split the bigger bikes have without labelling it that way.

The LS1 rows are its own lettered table. The XB and XE rows are extracted from prose — those manuals describe the fuse centre in a sentence rather than a table — so the ratings and voltages are Zero’s and the "input" versus "output" reading is ours, derived from the voltage each circuit carries. Neither the XB nor the XE owner manual documents the fuse centre at all; both entries come from the service manual.
Same idea, different scale
Even here the topology is recognisable: a high-voltage feed protected by its own fuse, a DC/DC converter, and a 12 V output feeding the switches and controls behind a second fuse. What changes is the traction voltage, the number of loads and whether the manual bothers to draw a table. Nothing in the Gen2 or Gen3 sections of this page — no part number, no rating, no dash code — carries over to these machines.
What this page does not cover, and where it came from
The scope is the owner-manual and service-manual fuse and 12 V material for model years 2015 and later: 343 rows from 68 tables in 35 documents, plus the Gen3 dash codes and the DC/DC converter procedures. Four things sit deliberately outside it.
- Model years 2013 and 2014. Their fuse tables are in our manual index and are genuinely different — no ABS circuits, a running-lights fuse instead of a combined dash fuse, and a JLLN70 accessory charge fuse on the FX where later years have JLLN100. They are used above only to show why MY2015 is the right boundary, never as a reference. Use the paper manual for those machines.
- Wiring colours, pin numbers and harness routing. Zero publishes wiring schematics in the service manuals as figures rather than text, so our text index cannot read them, and the pinouts circulating in the community archive are Gen2-specific and in one case mislabelled. A pin number is exactly the kind of claim that must not be guessed at.
- Aftermarket and third-party accessories, and any modification that taps the converter input for always-on power. The archive documents that tap and it works; it also puts a permanently live low-voltage circuit on a motorcycle that was not designed for one, and we are not going to publish a procedure for it.
- Defunct hardware. Charging accessories from vendors that no longer exist are not covered anywhere on this site, however well documented the archive left them, because a page that sends a reader shopping for an unobtainable part is worse than no page.
How the numbers on this page were produced
Every fuse rating, part number, dash code and torque is extracted from the indexed text of Zero’s manuals by `backend/scripts/gen_twelve_volt_tables.py`, which emits a generated TypeScript module that the prose then interpolates — so a figure in a sentence cannot drift from the table beside it. The extractor fails rather than warns: an unrecognised circuit label, a claim whose anchor sentence matches no manual, a dash code absent from the code list, or a torque whose imperial and metric halves do not convert into each other all stop the run. Two of those guards caught real errors while this page was written: six of the fifteen dash codes were silently dropped because their fault names start with a digit, and one manual’s ADV converter torque had to be reassembled across an interleaved column and was only trusted because 6 lb·ft and 8 Nm agree. Page numbers are not taken from that index at all. The index knows only which multi-page chunk a passage fell in, and its first page is not the page the passage is printed on: citing it put 64 of these 172 citations one or two pages out, whole manuals at a time, with every rating and torque correct. So each page is resolved by extracting the candidate pages from the PDF with `pdftotext -layout` — a path that does not touch the text index — and keeping the one that carries the passage. All 172 page references on this page were confirmed against the PDFs: the cited page was extracted with `pdftotext` and the passage found on it. None is the text index's guess.

Ordered by generation, then platform, then model year. Page numbers are PDF pages in the file named, each resolved by extracting the candidate pages from the PDF and keeping the one the table is actually printed on — the text index only knows which multi-page chunk it fell in.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the headlight fuse on a Zero SR/F?
There is not one. On the SR/F, SR/S and DSR/X the headlight is driven by the Power Distribution Unit, which Zero says "acts in place of the fuses" for 10 circuits including High Beam and Low Beam (26_FST_Street-_EU_-_English-_8812119-AC.pdf p136). If your headlight is dead, look for a dash code rather than a fuse: code 16 is "Headlight Short Fault Headlight Connection Short." and code 17 is "Headlight Bulb Out Fault Headlight Connection Open.". On a Gen2 S, DS, SR, DSR, FX, FXS or FXE the headlight fuse does exist: it is number 3 (10 A) in the 12 V fuse centre.
What is the accessory fuse rating on a Zero, and can I fit a bigger one?
On every Gen2 bike in our index it is 10 A, fuse 4 in the 12 V centre. No, do not fit a bigger one. The fuse protects the accessory harness rather than rationing the converter, so raising it to 12.5 A or 15 A — which the community archive records owners doing — makes the wiring the weakest link instead. Zero’s instruction is to "replace the fuse with one of equal current and voltage rating" (26_FST_Street-_EU_-_English-_8812119-AC.pdf p136). On a Gen3 there is no accessory fuse at all: the 12 V auxiliary outlet is a PDU circuit, and the two supplied accessory connectors are the only approved way to power an add-on.
How many high-voltage fuses does a Zero have, and can I replace them myself?
It depends on the platform. The S and DS list 4 — SPT3.15A Low Power B+, ABC4A MBB (Main Bike Board)/Controller, ABC4A DC/DC Converter, 100 A Charge Fuse (in-line) — of which the in-line charge fuse is explicitly dealer-only. The FX family lists 4, including two separate charge fuses. Gen3 lists only 2, both SPT3.15A. Whether you should replace one yourself is a different question from whether the manual shows the procedure: these cartridges sit on a bus above 100 V that is live with the key out, and Zero’s service manuals require training, insulating gloves and a documented lockout before that area is opened.
Why does my SR/F refuse to move on a cold morning?
Because the 12 V battery is being warmed. The Gen3 12 V battery has a heater bonded to its case that engages when recent temperatures have been below 41 °F (5 °C), and Zero states that during that warming the motorcycle is "temporarily disabled for 1-15 minutes until the temperature of the 12 volt battery is determined to be above 32 °F (0 °C)" (21MY_SRF_OM_-_English-05.pdf p155). The dash may also show the "12V Battery Heating up" notification. This is documented behaviour, not a fault.
What voltage and how many watts does the Zero DC/DC converter produce?
Zero has never published either figure. A full-text search of the manual index for a voltage, current or wattage adjacent to "DC/DC" or "DC-DC" returns nothing in any of the 46 documents we hold. The numbers in circulation — 13.5 V configured, roughly 13.8 V measured, 300 W before 2015 and 500 W after — come from the rescued zeromanual community archive and are owner measurements. They are probably about right, they are not a specification, and the same archive elsewhere calls the rail "a very consistent 14 volts", which cannot also be true.
Does a Zero have a 12 V battery I need to maintain?
Only a Gen3 does. The SR/F, SR/S and DSR/X carry a maintenance-free lithium iron phosphate 12 V battery under the rider’s seat, charged from the power pack and monitored by the main board. A Gen2 has none — its 12 V rail exists only while the DC/DC converter is enabled. If you do charge a Gen3’s, use an approved LiFePO4 charger, disconnect the battery from the motorcycle first, and do not attempt it at all if the battery has fallen below 10 V.
