Dashboard warning lights

A digital TFT dash built around a central circular charge/energy indicator ringed by four rider-customizable quadrant gauges (state of charge, range, trip, etc.), with a large digital speedometer, ride-mode label, regen/torque bar, clock, odometer, and ABS/traction mode readouts. Zero DS at a Glance: Specs & Key Features

The Zero DS is a street-legal dual-sport built on Zero's FST Adventure platform alongside the DSR and DSR/X. It runs a Z-Force ZF75-7 permanent-magnet AC motor, passively air-cooled and torque-optimised, fed by a high-efficiency 600-amp three-phase controller with regenerative deceleration. Two output tiers exist on the same hardware. The restricted DS (A1) makes 45 kW (60 hp) peak with an 11 kW continuous rating and tops out at 139 km/h (86 mph), while the Full Power DS makes 51 kW (68 hp) and reaches roughly 167 km/h (104 mph). Both deliver 132 Nm (97 lb-ft) of peak torque from a standstill. Because the powertrain is passively cooled, sustained hard use triggers a thermal strategy that gently reduces power to a level the bike can hold indefinitely, protecting long-term durability.

Controls, Dashboard & Indicator Lights

Everything on the DS is operated from the handlebars. The right grip is the throttle: twist it toward you to accelerate and release it to close and engage regen. The right cluster also holds the front brake lever with its adjustable reach knob, the motor stop (run/stop) switch, and the cruise-control button. The left cluster carries the high/low beam and flash-to-pass switch, turn signals with self-cancelling, the horn, the hazard flasher, and the MODE button that drives every menu on the dash.

The MODE button uses a simple grammar: tap left or right to scroll through menu options, press inward to select, slide right to jump into the traction-control menu, slide left to enter the heated-grip menu, and hold left to return to the riding screen. A one-second press from the riding screen opens the main menu for battery, performance, preferences and data functions. The TFT dash centres on a circular charge indicator ringed by the analog speedometer, with four customisable quadrant gauges around it, plus a clock, ride-mode name, odometer and a regen/torque meter that shows power going to or coming back from the rear wheel.

Each quadrant can display state of charge, estimated range, battery or motor temperature, instant or trip efficiency, motor RPM, or trip A/B distance. Battery and motor temperatures are shown as colour-coded bars rather than numbers.

Because the DS idles in total silence, it is easy to forget it is live. Always set the run/stop switch to OFF and drop the kickstand whenever you are not actively riding, and toggle run/stop to OFF before pushing or backing the bike by hand.

Ride Modes, Throttle & Regenerative Braking

The DS leaves the factory with five ride modes: ECO, STANDARD, SPORT, RAIN and CANYON, each with its own dash accent colour. ECO (green) softens acceleration, caps speed and maximises regen for the longest range and easiest low-speed control, making it ideal for new riders. STANDARD (light blue) is the balanced everyday setting. SPORT (light orange) gives the sharpest acceleration with reduced regen for experienced riders. CANYON (dark orange) accelerates like SPORT but adds strong regen for spirited, twisty riding. RAIN (blue) trims power and offers the gentlest regen for low-traction conditions. Using the Zero app you can build CUSTOM modes that replace CANYON on the bike.

Regenerative braking is central to how the DS rides. With the throttle fully closed and the bike moving, the motor recovers energy back into the pack and you feel a light drag that scrubs speed like engine braking. Just off fully closed is a zero-torque point where the bike coasts freely with no drive and no regen; this point shifts with speed and ride mode, so you can modulate deceleration with the throttle alone. Separately, four traction modes (STREET, SPORT, RAIN and OFFROAD, plus OFF) tune how much rear-wheel slip is allowed; OFFROAD disables rear-wheel ABS and permits more slip for loose surfaces.

You can change modes while riding, but if the throttle is open the change only takes effect once you close it. If the throttle is already closed, the change applies immediately.

To coast without regen drag, for example when carrying speed toward a corner, hold the throttle just off fully closed at the zero-torque point rather than releasing it completely.

Battery, Range & Charging: Times, Connectors & Habits

The DS's ZF14.4 power pack holds 14.4 kWh maximum (12.6 kWh nominal) and is managed by a sealed battery management system (BMS) that balances cells, controls charging and enforces safety interlocks. European bikes charge through an IEC 62196 Type 2 (Mennekes) socket; North American bikes use a Type 1 (J1772) socket. The standard 3.0 kW onboard charger can be lifted to 3.3 kW with the +10% Charge Power Cypher upgrade. The pack accepts charge only between 0°C and 50°C (32-122°F) internally, so a pack that is hot from hard riding may pause charging for up to about 30 minutes until it cools below 50°C.

Charging times depend on the supply. On European 230V, expect roughly 5.5 hours to 95% (5.8 to 100%) from a Mode 2 portable cable, or about 3.6 hours to 95% (4.0 to 100%) from a Mode 3 wall box or public station. In North America, a 110-120V Level 1 outlet takes about 9.2 hours to 95%, and a 208-240V Level 2 station about 4.0 hours to 95%. You can cap charging with a Charge Target (30-95% in 5% steps), schedule off-peak charging in the app, or enable Extended Range Charging for roughly 10% extra (shown as 110%) before a long trip.

Good charging habits protect pack life. For daily riders who do not use most of the capacity, avoid charging to 100% unnecessarily and let a hot pack cool before plugging in. Never leave the bike below 30% for long, and if the pack is fully depleted, recharge it within 24 hours.
