Zero noises: what each one means, and which ones are normal

There is no engine to hide behind. On a Zero you hear the belt, the pads, the bearings and the suspension directly, and the first question is always the same: is that normal? This page answers it from Zero's own manuals — 12 cases, each traced to the page that prints it, across 7 documents. 3 of them are sounds Zero states are expected, where the right action is to do nothing at all.

Brakes, steering and suspension are safety systems. A noise that is new, getting worse, or accompanied by any change in how the motorcycle behaves is a reason to stop and inspect, whatever this page says about it.

In short

  • A Zero's drive belt is never lubricated with oil, grease or chain lube. 11 of Zero's 13 models have one; only the XB and XE have a chain.
  • Belt noise is an ALIGNMENT symptom, not a lubrication one. Zero's own test: water quiets it for a few minutes. If it does, the belt is running against a sprocket flange and the fix is alignment, not lubricant.
  • 3 of the 12 documented cases are sounds Zero calls normal — including the motor's buzz and a new fork's squeak during break-in.
  • Zero publishes symptom-and-correction tables for brake noise in 2 of its 8 service manuals. If you own an SR/F, the table you are reading was written for a different bike.

Start here: your Zero almost certainly has no chain

The single most common piece of advice given to a rider with a noisy drivetrain is to lubricate the chain. On 11 of Zero's 13 models that is advice to pour oil onto a Gates carbon belt, which does not need it, is not helped by it, and picks up the grit that the oil then holds against the sprocket teeth.

Only the XB and XE — the small off-road models — have a chain. For those two, the folk advice is exactly right, and Zero specifies the interval and even the grade: every 300 mi (500 km), and after any ride in rain or dirt regardless of distance, with ISO grade 32 or 46 engine oil.

For every other Zero, the only lubricant that appears anywhere in the manuals in connection with the belt is DRY silicone, applied to the tooth side after washing, and applied to shed grit rather than to reduce friction.

Never oil a belt

Oil and wet chain lubricants hold grit against the belt teeth and attack the polymer. Zero's manuals also warn to keep any spray off the brake rotor and pads — contaminated pads cannot be cleaned, only replaced.

What Zero documents

Every row below is a phrase re-found in the named manual each time this site is built. If a phrase stops matching, the build fails rather than the page carrying on asserting it. The verdict column is not a severity scale — it says what kind of thing the noise is.

  • Normal — Zero states the sound is expected. Doing nothing is correct.
  • Adjust — something is out of adjustment. The sound is the symptom, not the fault.
  • Wear — a consumable has reached the end of its life.
  • Fault — a component has failed or been contaminated. Riding on it is a risk.

Drive

A hum, whirr or scrubbing from the belt that rises and falls with road speed

Spraying water on the belt quiets it for a few minutes. That is a DIAGNOSTIC, not a repair: if water silences it, the noise is the belt tracking against a sprocket flange, and the permanent fix is alignment.

Belt noise that survives a wash

Adjustment

When: After rinsing the belt and sprockets has not ended it

Grit held on the tooth side of the beltSpray the belt with water, let it dry fully, then apply a thin coating of DRY silicone to the tooth side. Never oil, grease or a wet chain lube.

Zero's own caution: keep the silicone off the brake rotor and pads. This is the only lubricant any Zero manual applies to a belt, and it is applied to shed grit, not to reduce friction.

A dry rasp or clatter from the chain

A dragging brake also costs range and heats the rotor, so on an electric motorcycle it shows up as consumption before it shows up as a noise.

A squeal from new pads or a new rotor

Normal

When: The first rides after a pad or rotor change

New pads or rotor that have not been bedded inBed the brakes: from 40 mph (64 km/h) brake progressively down to 10 mph (16 km/h), repeatedly, without locking the wheel — Zero's procedure deposits an even layer of pad material on the disc.

Zero warns that with new pads the FIRST few applications give very little braking power. That is the part of this that is a safety issue, not the noise.

A metallic tinkle from the caliper over bumps

Notchy, rough or grinding steering; a knock from the headstock under braking

When: Turning the bars, especially at walking pace or on the stand

Steering bearings dry, wrongly assembled or wornRotate the triple clamp back and forth to check for rubbing or grinding; if the movement is not smooth, strip and inspect. Zero's schedule repacks these bearings with grease every 16,000 mi (25,000 km).

Zero's torque sequence for the stem is deliberate — 34 Nm, loosen, 34 Nm again, loosen, then 15.5 Nm final. A stem simply torqued to its final figure is how a headstock ends up either notchy or loose.

A creak or clunk from the side stand

Adjustment

When: Putting the bike on or off the stand, or pulling away

Dry kickstand pivotCheck operation and apply silicone grease lightly. It is a scheduled item at the first 100 mi (160 km) service and again at 600 mi (1,000 km).

Worth doing properly rather than ignoring: the same schedule line checks the kickstand SWITCH, and a failed switch stops the bike moving at all.

Suspension

Squeaking from the front suspension on a new bike

Normal

When: During the break-in period

This is stated for the XE and for the break-in period only. A fork that squeaks after break-in, or on any other model, is not covered by it.

Motor & electronics

A buzz or whine from the motor that tracks road speed

Normal

When: Any time the motor is turning

This is the sound riders most often mistake for a failing bearing, because on a petrol bike nothing at that frequency is normal.

The brake tables, and who they were written for

Zero publishes a proper symptom / cause / correction table for brake noise — the kind of thing a workshop manual should have — in 2 of its 8 service manuals: the SDS manual (S, SR, DS, DSR) and the XMX manual (FX, FXS, FXE). The three FST manuals, which cover the SR/F, SR/S, DS, DSR and DSR/X on the current platform, carry none.

That does not make the tables useless to an SR/F owner — the hardware is a conventional hydraulic disc brake either way — but it does mean the table is not something Zero published about their motorcycle, and this page will not pretend otherwise.

What riders report and Zero documents nowhere

These are common, they are real, and no Zero manual in the corpus mentions any of them. They are separated from everything above for that reason: this section is experience, not evidence, and it carries no page citation because there is none to give.

  • A clunk from the driveline when you roll off the throttle or regen comes in. Belt drives have very little backlash compared with a chain, so what is usually audible is the sprocket and the wheel cush taking up. Worth checking belt tension and the five sprocket bolts before assuming anything worse.
  • A hum or whine from under the seat with the bike stationary and on. The DC/DC converter and, on some bikes, the onboard charger. It changes with load rather than with road speed, which is what tells it apart from anything rotating.
  • A fan. Charging hardware on several models is actively cooled, so a bike that is silent while riding can be audible while plugged in.
  • Creaks from bodywork, footpegs and the seat. Very audible with no engine noise, almost always a fastener or a rubbing panel edge, and the one category here where a methodical hand-pressure hunt while the bike is stationary usually finds it in minutes.

A noise that changes with SPEED, LOAD or BRAKING tells you where to look

With road speed: something rotating — belt, sprockets, wheel bearings, discs. With motor load rather than speed: electrical. Only when braking: the brakes. Only over bumps: suspension, or something loose. This is the one diagnostic that costs nothing and narrows the field before you touch a tool.

When a noise means stop riding

Most of this page is about sounds that are annoying rather than dangerous. Three are not, and they are worth separating out.

  • A continuous rub that does not stop, with a wheel hard to turn by hand. A dragging brake heats the rotor and the fluid; on an electric motorcycle it usually shows up as lost range before it shows up as a noise.
  • Grinding or notchiness from the steering, or a knock from the headstock under braking. Steering-head bearings.
  • Anything from the belt that appeared suddenly along with a change in how the bike drives. A belt that has been ratcheting — skipping teeth, usually from being too slack — has damaged tensile cords, and that is a failure that does not announce itself twice.

Should I lubricate my Zero's drive belt?

No — not with oil, grease or chain lubricant. 11 of Zero's 13 models use a Gates carbon belt, and the only thing Zero's manuals ever apply to one is a thin coating of DRY silicone on the tooth side, after washing and drying, to shed grit. Only the XB and XE have a chain, and those are lubricated every 300 mi (500 km) with ISO grade 32 or 46 engine oil.

Why does my Zero's belt hum or whirr?

Zero's service manual attributes belt noise to the belt running hard against the flanges on the sprockets, caused by sprocket misalignment, wheel misalignment, or runout from damaged components. Spraying water on it quiets it for a few minutes, which is a useful test but not a repair — the permanent fix is to correct the alignment or replace the damaged part.

Is the buzzing from my Zero's motor normal?

Yes. Zero states it directly in the LS1 owner manual: the motor emits a buzzing sound, which is the sound of high-speed magnetic field vibration, and it is a normal phenomenon. It is the sound riders most often mistake for a failing bearing, because on a petrol bike nothing at that frequency is normal.

My new brake pads squeal. Is something wrong?

Usually the brakes have not been bedded in. The important part is not the noise: Zero warns that with new pads the first few applications give very little braking power.

My Zero's forks squeak. Is that a problem?

On a new XE during break-in, no — the owner manual states it is normal to hear some squeaking from the front suspension in that period, and that proper lubrication mitigates it. That statement is about the XE and about break-in only. A fork that squeaks after break-in, or on another model, is not covered by it.

Does Zero publish a troubleshooting table for noises?

For brakes, in 2 of its 8 service manuals — the SDS and XMX manuals, which cover the S, SR, DS, DSR, FX, FXS and FXE. The FST manuals covering the current SR/F, SR/S and DSR/X platform carry none. For other systems the guidance is scattered through the maintenance and procedure sections rather than gathered into a table, which is why this page exists.
