Dashboard warning lights

What each dashboard indicator means and what to do when it lights up.

The FX uses a single round instrument pod: a large central digital speedometer wrapped by a 12-segment analog speed ring, flanked by two rider-customizable data fields (Displays A and B) plus the selected ride mode (ECO/SPORT/CUSTOM), OUTPUT (torque/power) and REGEN meters, and a battery charge indicator that shows state-of-charge % or estimated time-to-full. Nine tell-tale warning lights border the display alongside a clock, odometer and Bluetooth icon, with the SEL and ADJ buttons beneath.

Armed / Live Indicator
Blinking: the drive system is enabled but not yet ready to produce torque. Solid: the motorcycle is live and will move if the throttle is applied.
Treat a solid light as ready-to-ride; do not apply throttle until you intend to move.
High Beam Indicator
Illuminates while the headlight high beam is on and stays on until high beam is switched off.
Informational; switch to low beam for oncoming traffic.
Left Turn Signal Indicator
Flashes while the left turn signal is active.
Cancel the turn signal after completing your turn.
ABS Indicator
Lights with the key ON and normally goes out once the bike exceeds 5 km/h (3 mph); staying lit means ABS is disabled or has a fault.
If it stays on above 5 km/h the ABS is inactive — brake gently and have it serviced; a full stop then key OFF/ON can reset it.
Charging Indicator
Slow green flash: accepting a charge. Solid green: fully charged. Rapid orange flash: charging error detected.
On a rapid orange flash, check the charger, cable and AC outlet.
Temperature Warning Indicator
Flashing: a powertrain component is approaching its temperature limit (no power loss yet). Solid: the limit is exceeded and power/speed are reduced until it cools.
Ease off speed/power until it stops flashing; this is the normal thermal strategy, not a malfunction.
Right Turn Signal Indicator
Flashes while the right turn signal is active.
Cancel the turn signal after completing your turn.
Check Engine Light
An error has put the motorcycle into permanent torque reduction; it is accompanied by a dash error (diagnostic) code.
Note the error code shown on Display A and contact your dealer to have the motorcycle serviced.
System Warning Indicator
A system fault has been detected; the number of red flashes (repeating) identifies the fault condition.

Zero FX Overview: Specs & Key Numbers at a Glance

The Zero FX is Zero Motorcycles' lightweight dual-sport: freeway-capable yet trail-friendly, with a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wire wheel and knobby dual-sport tyres. It is a true zero-emissions vehicle with no gears to shift, no clutch, no oil and almost no routine drivetrain upkeep. Power comes from a passively air-cooled Z-Force 75-5 brushless motor driving the rear wheel through a clutchless direct drive and a Gates Poly Chain carbon belt (a chain is available as an option).

At the heart of the FX is the Z-Force Intelligent Modular power pack rated at 7.2 kWh maximum (6.3 kWh nominal). Depending on how it was ordered, the FX can carry one or two modular packs, letting you swap or charge one while riding on another. The motor delivers 106 Nm (78 lb·ft) of torque and roughly 34 kW (44-46 hp), good for a top speed near 137 km/h (85 mph) and a thermally sustainable cruise around 113 km/h (70 mph).

The FX is deliberately light and nimble, so it rewards smooth inputs and rewards riders who treat it as the genuine performance machine it is. Its closest sibling is the street-focused FXE, which shares the same powertrain but uses cast wheels, road tyres and revised bodywork.

Your 17-digit VIN is stamped on the head tube. On the FX the model-line characters are 'XD'; the motor serial is on the right side of the motor housing and the pack serial is under the retaining rail on the top right of the power pack.

Controls, Dashboard & Warning Indicators Explained

The FX uses a three-position key switch on the fork: Steering Lock, OFF and ON. In ON the lights and dash wake up and the bike is ready to be armed. To lock the steering, turn the bars fully left, push the key down and turn it counter-clockwise with the key in OFF, then remove it. The digital dash shows a central speedometer ringed by a 12-segment analog bar (each segment represents 12.5 mph / 20 km/h), along with the odometer, battery charge level, a torque/power output meter and a regen meter that shows energy flowing back into the pack.

Two customisable readouts flank the dash. Display A (press SEL once, then ADJ to cycle) shows Range, Motor RPM, Trip 1 or the two-digit Error code. Display B (press SEL twice) shows Trip 2, Instant energy use, Average energy use, Lifetime energy use or Motor temperature. Trip 1 and the average energy reading both reset automatically each time the pack is recharged to 100%. You can switch the clock between 12- and 24-hour formats and toggle speed (mph/km-h) and temperature (°F/°C) units through the same SEL/ADJ menus.

The handlebars carry a high/low beam switch, flash-to-pass, horn, self-cancel-free turn signals (you must cancel them manually), a hazard flasher, the motor stop (run/stop) switch and the performance Mode button. A Bluetooth icon confirms pairing with the free Zero smartphone app, which lets you tune CUSTOM mode, read precise state of charge and real-time power, and email diagnostic logs to Zero support.

  • ABS light: normally lit at key-ON, goes out once both wheels pass 3 mph (5 km/h)

To pair Bluetooth, keep the bike keyed ON with the kickstand down and run switch in Stop, then hold the Mode button about 5 seconds until the Bluetooth icon blinks. The bike appears as ZeroMotorcyclesXXXXX, where XXXXX is the last five VIN digits.

Ride Modes, Throttle & Regenerative Braking

The FX offers three performance modes selected with the Mode button on the right handlebar: ECO, SPORT and CUSTOM. ECO reduces acceleration and top speed while adding stronger regenerative braking, making it the best choice for new riders and for maximising range. SPORT sharpens acceleration significantly and eases off the regen, and is aimed at experienced riders. CUSTOM is fully configurable through the smartphone app so you can dial in your own power, torque, top-speed and regen preferences. You can change modes on the move, but the new setting only engages once you return the throttle to fully closed.

The throttle works like any twist-grip: rotate it toward you (counter-clockwise) to accelerate, and release it to let it snap back to closed. The instant you close the throttle while moving, regenerative braking engages, applying a gentle drag on the rear wheel and feeding energy back into the pack. If you want to coast freely without that drag, simply hold the throttle just barely off the fully closed position.

Regen is not a substitute for the brakes, but in ECO mode it does noticeably more of the slowing for you, which is why it feels smoother and stretches range in stop-and-go riding. Because the FX is silent and light, always keep the throttle closed while braking and practise controlled stops until they feel natural.

Use the rear brake to hold the bike on a hill or incline. Do not try to hold position with partial throttle against the motor, as this can overheat and damage it.

Battery, Range & Charging: Times, Connectors & Rules

The FX charges through its integrated 650 W on-board charger using the supplied cord. A full 0-100% charge takes about 9.7 hours (roughly 10 hours in mild temperatures) and about 9.2 hours to 95%; crucially, charging on 240 V is no faster than 120 V because the on-board charger draws the same power either way (up to about 14 A from a 120 V circuit). To slash charge times, the FX supports up to four supplemental accessory quick chargers, which together can cut charging by as much as 75%, reaching full in around 4.1 hours (3.6 hours to 95%). You can charge from a Level 1 public outlet with the supplied cord, or use the optional J1772 adapter (Zero PN 10-03267) at Level 2 stations — though the adapter alone does not speed things up unless a supplemental charger is also fitted.

Temperature limits matter. The pack will not accept a charge below 32°F (0°C) or above 122°F (50°C), and after hard or hot riding it may need up to 30 minutes to cool before it starts charging. Above about 43°C (109°F) the charger reduces current, extending charge time. The whole pack should only be operated between -4°F and 140°F (-20°C to 60°C); the BMS shuts the power controller off beyond that range. In cold weather you may temporarily lose up to 30% range, and Zero advises against riding once the pack drops below 23°F (-5°C).

Battery care is mostly about avoiding long spells at extreme states of charge. If the pack is fully discharged, recharge it within 24 hours. If you ride short distances, there is no need to top to 100% every time — parking at a lower charge in the heat is kinder to the cells. Below 30% SoC, charge to at least 60% and unplug. Once charged, disconnecting the charger puts the pack into a very slow-draining hibernate mode, which is best for long-term health.
