Dashboard warning lights

What each dashboard indicator means and what to do when it lights up.

A round central Charge Indicator shows remaining pack energy, framed by four customizable gauge quadrants (A-D) and encircled by a Regen/Torque meter; the digital speedometer, selected ride mode, ABS and traction modes, clock, odometer and status icons (Bluetooth, cruise, heated grips) sit around it, with a row of warning tell-tales along the display.

Armed / Live Indicator
Motorcycle is live and ready to drive forward under throttle (key ON, motor-stop set to Run, charge cable disconnected, kickstand up).
Be aware the bike can move when the throttle is actuated; stay in control before riding off.
High Beam Indicator
Headlight high beam is on; stays lit until high beam is switched off.

Traction Control (MTC) Indicator
Illuminates when traction control has been disabled; blinks when traction control is actively intervening.
Re-enable traction control for normal road riding; expect intervention on low-grip surfaces.
Charge / Plug Indicator
Flashes while the motorcycle is actively charging; illuminates solid briefly when fully charged before the dash powers down.

Zero SR at a Glance: Specs, Range & Powertrain

The Zero SR is powered by an air-cooled Z-Force 75-10 interior-permanent-magnet AC motor running the Cypher III operating system, driving the rear wheel through a clutchless direct drive and a Poly Chain HTD Carbon belt (20-tooth motor sprocket, 90-tooth wheel sprocket). It is a true zero-emissions vehicle — no gears to shift, no fluids to burn, and no tailpipe. Energy is stored in a Z-Force ZF15.6 lithium-ion power pack rated at 15.6 kWh maximum and 13.6 kWh nominal, and the bike carries a 3.3 kW onboard charger.

The SR ships in a Full Power configuration and reduced-output A2/A3 variants that differ mainly in controller amperage and motor output. In Full Power trim it produces 86 hp (64 kW) and 122 lb-ft (166 Nm) via a 785-amp controller, with a top speed of 104 mph (167 km/h). The A2 tune is softer at 70 hp (52 kW) / 140 Nm and 93 mph (150 km/h). The SR's 13.6 kWh nominal figure is the usable energy you actually ride on; the 15.6 kWh 'maximum' is the pack's headline capacity. Plan range from the nominal number and your own consumption, not the brochure best-case city figure.

Controls, Dashboard & Warning Indicators

The SR is operated with a twist throttle (twist toward you to accelerate), a right-hand front brake lever, a right-foot rear brake pedal, a key switch that doubles as the steering lock, and a handlebar-mounted motor stop switch that cuts power to the motor without shutting off the electrics. Menus and settings are driven entirely by the MODE button, a five-way rocker: tap left/right to scroll, slide (hold ~0.5 s) or hold (~1 s) for shortcuts, and press inward to select. Holding MODE left always returns you to the riding screen.

The colour dash shows a large state-of-charge ring around a digital speedometer (each of its 12 segments is 20 km/h / 10 mph), a clock, ABS and traction-mode labels, and four customisable quadrant gauges you can populate with SOC, estimated range, battery or motor temperature, instant/trip efficiency, RPM, ambient temperature, or trip meters. A Menu screen gives access to Preferences, Battery, Performance and Data (including stored error codes), plus firmware updates and Bluetooth pairing to the Zero smartphone app.

Learn the warning indicators before you ride. Some are informational (turn signals, high beam, armed/live), while others demand attention: a solid red temperature light means the powertrain is thermally limiting itself, and the check-engine light signals a fault that has put the bike into permanent torque reduction until serviced.

Because the SR idles in total silence, it is easy to walk away from a live bike. Always switch the key and the motor stop switch to OFF and lower the kickstand when you stop — dropping the kickstand alone disables the drive system.

Ride Modes, Throttle & Regenerative Braking

The SR leaves the factory with five ride modes — ECO, STANDARD, SPORT, CANYON and RAIN — plus a CUSTOM slot you configure in the Zero app. Each mode remaps throttle response, peak torque, top speed and the amount of regenerative braking, and each has its own dash accent colour. To change mode, press and hold MODE for about a second from the riding screen, tap left/right to the mode you want, then slide-and-hold MODE left for one second to apply it. You can switch on the move: the change takes effect the instant you close the throttle.

Regenerative braking is central to how the SR rides. Whenever the bike is moving and you close the throttle fully, the motor becomes a generator, slowing the bike and feeding energy back into the pack — you feel a distinct engine-braking drag. If you want to coast freely, hold the throttle at its 'zero-torque' point just off fully closed; that point shifts with speed and ride mode. Each mode dials regen differently, so the same throttle release feels stronger in ECO or CANYON than in SPORT or RAIN.

Cruise control is standard. Reach your desired speed, then long-press (0.5 s) the cruise button to set it; a short press or any brake input cancels it. Cruise operates only between 30 km/h (18 mph) and 144 km/h (89 mph), and there is no incremental bump-up — to change the set speed you cancel and re-set at the new speed.

Switching modes only executes once the throttle is closed. If nothing happens when you toggle mid-corner, it's because you're still on the gas — roll off and the change lands immediately.

ABS, Traction Control & Rider Aids

The SR runs Bosch ABS with Base motorcycle stability control, backed by Motorcycle Traction Control (MTC) and Drag Torque Control (DTC). It is normal for the ABS light to glow at a standstill; it goes out once both wheel-speed sensors read above 5 km/h (3 mph) and stays off until the next key cycle. A large front-to-rear wheel-speed mismatch — wheelies, burnouts, loose gravel — can trip the ABS light and temporarily disable ABS; to restore it, stop, turn the key off for about five seconds, then back on. If the light stays lit above 5 km/h, ABS is genuinely faulted and the bike brakes like a non-ABS machine.

MTC reduces motor torque when the rear wheel loses grip and offers four settings — STREET, SPORT, RAIN and OFF — that are pre-selected by ride mode but can be changed manually (slide-and-hold MODE right, tap to the setting, press to confirm). The traction light glows steadily when TC is switched off and blinks when it intervenes. DTC works the other way, managing regen on deceleration to prevent rear-wheel slip when you lift off. Importantly, DTC is tied to ABS: if you disable ABS, DTC switches off too, while MTC is unaffected.

An optional Parking Mode (a Cypher III+ upgrade) adds low-speed powered forward and reverse for shuffling the bike in tight spots and on inclines. It is not a parking brake — apply the throttle gently and watch for pedestrians when reversing. Enter it from the menu with the bike stationary, raise the kickstand, set the motor stop to Run, and use the cruise button to swap forward/reverse; drop the kickstand, cut the motor stop, or turn the key off to exit.

ABS and traction control shorten stopping distances and manage grip, but they cannot beat physics in a corner — braking hard mid-turn still overwhelms the system. Treat the aids as a safety net, not a licence to over-ride.

Battery, Range & Charging: Times, Connectors & Do's & Don'ts

The SR's 3.3 kW onboard charger accepts universal 100–240 V AC. In Europe the charge socket is a Type 2 (Mennekes) connector; in North America it is a Type 1 (J1772). From a standard 208–240 V supply (EU Mode 2/Mode 3 single-phase, or North American Level 2) the pack reaches 100% in about 4.4 hours, or 95% in 3.9 hours. From a 110–120 V household outlet (Level 1) expect roughly 10.5 hours to 100% or 10.0 hours to 95%. In mild temperatures a full charge is typically under five hours. Unlike the SR/F and SR/S, the SR has no factory charge-rate upgrade — 3.3 kW is its ceiling.

You can cap charging with a Charge Target (settable 30–95% in 5% steps) or schedule off-peak charging in the app; if no target is set, the pack charges to 100%. The optional Extended Range Charging (a Cypher III+ upgrade) adds roughly 10% headroom, shown as '110%' on the dash, and must be re-selected for each charge. The BMS will not charge below 0°C (32°F) or above 50°C (122°F) internal pack temperature; a hot pack after hard riding may refuse a charge until it cools, usually within 30 minutes.

How you charge affects pack life more than almost anything else.
